WHAT ARE GLOBAL ISSUES?

Global issues refer to world problems such as war, hunger, poverty, oppression, racism, sexism, environmental destruction and to concepts such as peace, justice, human rights, world development, social responsibility and international understanding.

WHAT IS GLOBAL EDUCATION?

Global education is an approach to language teaching which aims at enabling students to effectively acquire and use a foreign language while empowering them with the knowledge, skills and commitment required by world citizens for the solution of global problems.

JALT "GLOBAL ISSUES IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION SIG"

The Global Issues in Language Education Special Interest Group (GILE SIG) of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) aims to: (a) promote the integration of global issues, global awareness and social responsibility in language teaching, (b) foster networking and mutual support among language educators dealing with global issues, (c) promote awareness among language teachers of important developments in global education and the fields of environmental education, human rights education, peace education and development education.

THE "GLOBAL ISSUES IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION" NETWORK

The GILE network is an informal network of language teachers and global educators who share an interest in how world problems, global awareness, social responsibility and world citizenship can be integrated into foreign language teaching.

BECOMING A JALT SIG MEMBER:

All JALT members are entitled to one free SIG up to April 2006. If you're a JALT member, you can join "Global Issues" as your one free SIG by signing up through JALT. Each additional JALT SIG costs 1,500 yen. To join "Global Issues" as an additional SIG, fill out the JALT postal furikae form found in each issue of The Language Teacher magazine and take this with your 1,500 yen payment to any post office in Japan. Newsletters are issued 4 times a year.

BECOMING A GLOBAL ISSUES NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIBER (non-JALT):

Interested teachers or institutions are welcome to subscribe to our quarterly "Global Issues in Language Education Newsletter." Annual subscriptions are ¥2000, US $15 or UK 10 pounds. In Japan, send a payment of 2000 yen to Kip Cates at the address below by post office cheque (teigaku kogawase) available at any post office. Overseas subscribers can pay in either US dollars or UK pounds. All checks should be from a US or UK bank and should be made out to "Kip Cates." Please inquire about newsletter exchanges or complimentary subscriptions for global organizations, language teaching associations and teachers in developing countries.
